Sensational Ten-Pin Bowling Performance on Corporate Day Out!

Cànan 10 pin bowling team

Marlene MacDonald, Sgleog editor and stalwart member of Cànan’s languageSolutions department, lead her team to victory with a phenomenal striking display to finish on top of the standings in the company’s first-ever ten-pin bowling competition in Inverness on Monday 6 February.

Cànan staff decamped to Inverness for 24 hours as a reward for all their hard work over the preceding seasons, and built up for the tournament with some strategic planning exercises ahead of an exciting announcement scheduled for early March.

Well-placed sources have indicated that this “announcement” will unveil some impressive new signings by the Cànan management, as well as throwing new light on stories about “new facilities”.

Back at the bowling centre, colleagues scrambled for their “Great Sporting Clichés” dictionaries as Marlene fired in a couple of unstoppable screamers to rack up a sensational series of strikes, just edging creativeLearning’s Chris Mitchell in the scoring stakes.

Marlene’s normally eloquent answers were drowned out by the celebrations, but were paraphrased as: “I wanted to get some strikes in early doors … we had a game plan and we stuck to it. I thought all the boys and girls done good. In fact, we showed genuine pace down the flanks, and were superb throughout the game. All credit to our opponents, who must be gutted, but I thought our win was merited.”

As the conscientious athletes repaired to a nearby Chinese restaurant for a post-match dissection, Marlene revealed that maternity leave will keep her out of the starting line-up until September, but that her replacement, Moira MacIver, will bring a wealth of experience to the Sgleog editorship.

In business terms, the Cànan team’s outstanding performances in recent years culminated in a tremendous 2004-2005 season, where they clinched some silverware at the 2005 Highlands and Islands Business Awards. Several successful forays into Europe followed for fixtures at the ‘Open Source for Education Conference’ in Heerlen, Holland, and coaching spells in Prague and Brno in the Czech Republic. A summer tour is being lined up with a scheduled appearance by “front line stars” in Montreal, Canada.
